Trek for between 4-5 hrs each day through farmland, steamy jungle, and rural communities, and get a glimpse of local families going about their daily lives. The route runs along the Buritaca River, and there are natural swimming pools at the campsites to enjoy a refreshing dip before relaxing in a hammock.

    4x4
    Santa Marta - Machete Pelao
Roads? Where this rough-and-ready vehicle's going, we don't need roads.

    Lost City Trek Day 1
Machete Pelao - Ciudad Perdida Trek Campsite 1 7-8km
Leave Machete Pelao and start trekking through the jungle, following along the Buritaca River. Pass by farmland and get a glimpse of the daily life of families in the small communities on route to the campsite. This first day of trekking is relatively straightforward and a good way to ease yourself into the trek. Beginning from Machete Pelao, the land is flat and a well-marked track leads the way to the first campsite. Unwind at camp with a dip in the natural swimming pools or take a nap in a hammock. (Dinner,Lunch)

  • DAY 5 Ciudad Perdida Trek Campsite 1/Ciudad Perdida Trek Campsite 2

Continue trekking along the route to Ciudad Perdida.

    Lost City Trek Day 2
Ciudad Perdida Trek Campsite 1 - Ciudad Perdida Trek Campsite 2 7-8km
Begin trekking alongside the Buritaca River early in the morning. Pass through more farmland used for growing coffee or raising cattle. Climbing on this part of the trek can be challenging as the route progresses uphill from the riverbed and through the humid jungle. Take a look at the unique, circular huts that make up some of the Kogi villages in the area. This is the longest day of the trek, and with uphill climbs can be the hardest day along the route. In the dry season, this can be dry and dusty underfoot which can make for challenging climbs. During the rainy season, rivers are higher and crossings can be more of a challenge. Once you make it to the camp, cool off with a swim in the river before dinner. (Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner)

  • DAY 6 Ciudad Perdida Trek Campsite 2/Ciudad Perdida Trek Campsite Teyuna Paraiso

Continue trekking along the route to Ciudad Perdida.

    Lost City Trek Day 3
Ciudad Perdida Trek Campsite 2 - Ciudad Perdida Trek Campsite Teyuna Paraiso 7-8km
In the morning start the most difficult length of the Lost City Trek. The route continues along the river but this stretch has a steep incline. If the group wants a break, take the opportunity to jump in the river and cool off. Trekkers should carry water today, especially if the weather is hot and humid. There are some points where the hike passes narrow ledges that can present a challenge if for anyone who is not too steady on their feet. Arrive at the Teyuna Paraiso campsite around mid-afternoon. (Dinner,Lunch,Breakfast)

  • DAY 7 Ciudad Perdida Trek Campsite Teyuna Paraiso/Ciudad Perdida

Early start to climb the 1,200 steps to get to the Lost City, but the view across the surrounding mountains is more than worth the hike.

    Lost City Trek Day 4
Ciudad Perdida Trek Campsite Teyuna Paraiso - Ciudad Perdida
Get ready for the last part of the trek to the Lost City, followed by exploring this historic site with a local guide. The once-forgotten city is only one more hour away and requires climbing 1,200 steps built by the ancient Tayrona people. This is a very steep climb and if it is humid, this can be tough. Similarly, when it is wet, it can be slippery underfoot, but the rewards of the climb are more than worth it. Learn about the site's origins and feel free to explore. The guide will be able to tell you about the history of the Lost City and what is known of it's origins. Remember when at the site, it is estimated that only 10% of this has yet been discovered. Head back to the campsite for lunch and a swim before beginning the trek back down to Machete Pelao, following the route which was the way in. Most of the trek today is downhill and while this can be easier, it can be hard on the knees, so a walking stick might be useful. (Dinner,Breakfast,Lunch)

  • DAY 8 Ciudad Perdida/Taganga

After a final morning trek back to Machete Pelao, transfer to the fishing village of Taganga for an afternoon of rest and relaxation.

    Lost City Trek Day 5
Ciudad Perdida - Machete Pelao 7-8km
Continue the hike back down to Machete Pelao, following the same route as on the way up. The farmland that you pass will look familiar, but the hike features a variety of ascents and descents but the views remain spectacular. Enjoy the view of the jungle and local villages before heading back on the grid.
